How this works
Each race has its own bank of first names, split by gender, plus a matching pool of surnames or clan names built to fit that species' naming conventions. When a class is selected, the generator also appends a short epithet drawn from a pool written for that class's archetype — a Rogue gets something shadow-themed, a Paladin gets something oath-themed, and so on. Set race, class, or gender to "random" to let the generator surprise you, or lock any of them in for a specific character concept.
FAQ
- Why does race matter for the name?
- Different fantasy species read differently — dwarven names lean guttural and clan-based, elven names lean melodic, halfling names lean homely and food-themed, tiefling names often draw on virtues or infernal-sounding syllables. Picking a race pulls from a name bank built for that flavor instead of one generic pool for everything.
- What does the class epithet do?
- It appends a short fantasy byname flavored for that class — a Barbarian might come out "Grukk Bonecrusher — the Unbroken" while a Wizard gets something like "Elarion Starleaf — the Archivist." It's a naming-convention shortcut, not a game mechanic; turn it off if you just want a first and last name.
- Will I get the same name twice?
- It's possible — the name banks are large but finite, and each generation is independent, so repeats can happen the way rolling dice can repeat. Use the reroll button on an individual result if you want to keep the rest of a batch and just swap out one name.
- Is this affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?
