How this works

Print size is just pixel count divided by DPI: an image that's 3600 pixels wide, printed at 300 DPI, comes out 12 inches wide — the same pixels printed at 150 DPI would come out 24 inches wide, just softer. "Print size → Pixels" runs that math in reverse for planning a design from scratch, and "Check DPI" tells you the effective resolution of an image you already have at a size you're considering, including a warning if the image's proportions don't match the print size you're aiming for.

FAQ

What's the difference between DPI and pixel dimensions?
Pixel dimensions (e.g. 3600 × 2400 px) are fixed — that's the actual data in the file. DPI (dots per inch) is how densely those pixels get packed onto paper, which is what determines the physical print size. The same image file can print small and sharp at 300 DPI, or large and soft at 100 DPI — neither is "wrong," they're just suited to different viewing distances.
Why does 300 DPI keep coming up as the standard?
At a normal reading distance (roughly arm's length), the eye stops resolving individual dots somewhere around 250-300 per inch, so 300 DPI is the point past which more resolution doesn't visibly improve sharpness for most people. Large-format prints get away with much less because they're viewed from farther away — a billboard at 20 DPI looks perfectly sharp from the street.
Is DPI the same as PPI?
Technically DPI (dots per inch) refers to a printer's physical ink dots and PPI (pixels per inch) refers to the image file, but in casual and even most professional use the terms are used interchangeably for exactly this calculation. This tool treats them the same way.
What does the aspect ratio warning mean?
If your image's width-to-height ratio doesn't match the print size you're targeting, something has to give — the print will either crop part of the image to fill the frame, or add white space (padding) to fit it without cropping, depending on how your printer or print-on-demand service handles it. Cropping your image yourself to the target ratio first gives you control over what gets cut.
