What X actually counts
67
Links detected (1)
23 chars (23 each)

Every link counts as exactly 23 characters no matter how long it is, and CJK characters and most emoji count as 2 each — that's why the count above can differ from what you typed.

How this counter works

Most character counters just run .length on your text, which is fine until a link or an emoji throws the number off. This one runs the same weighting logic X applies internally: links become a flat 23 characters through the t.co wrapper, and CJK characters and most emoji count double. It updates as you type, so you can see exactly which part of a post is eating your budget before you hit publish and find out the hard way.

FAQ

Why does the count not match what I typed?
X doesn't count characters one-for-one. Every link is replaced with a fixed-length t.co wrapper worth exactly 23 characters — regardless of how long or short the real URL is — and CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) and most emoji are weighted as 2 characters instead of 1. A post that looks short can still hit the limit fast if it leans on those.
Why does a short URL still cost 23 characters?
X wraps every link in its own t.co shortener automatically, even ones that are already short — so the 23-character cost is fixed and unavoidable, not a limit you can get around by shortening the link yourself first.
What's the actual limit if I have X Premium?
Premium (and Premium+) subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters in a single long post, instead of the 280-character limit free accounts get. Switch the toggle above to see how much more room that gives you.
Does this count replies and quote posts the same way?
Yes — the same 280 (or 25,000) character budget and the same weighting rules apply to replies and quote-post comments, not just original posts.
